Challenger is hosting a Star Party with the members of the San Diego Astronomy Association in the Shuttle Court. They bring their own telescopes so we can see Mars, Venus, Jupiter and all kinds of wonderful sights in the sky. Free hot chocolate or cider will be available. • New Phone System

Challenger has a new phone network system which required a new number, 858-302-3000.  One of the benefits of the new network is voice mail; you will be able to leave teachers messages.  Please be patient with us as we learn the new system and establish our voice mail boxes.  The fax number will remain the same.  Our old phone number will work for a few months while everyone gets used to the change.

  • We Are Proud To Be A Distinguished School

On February 25, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, announced that Challenger Middle School is one of the 162 middle and high schools that have been designated a 2019 California Distinguished School.  After a three year break in the program, this is the first year secondary schools have been recognized for exceptional student performance for two consecutive school years or closing the achievement gap between two school years.  Challenger is one of two schools in the San Diego Unified School District who earned this designation, and is the third time Challenger has been awarded this honor with the first time being in 2001 and the second being in 2011.

The teamwork of dedicated staff, supportive parents, and, of course, hard-working students resulted in Challenger becoming eligible for the award.  Out of pride and love for their school, another team of enthusiastic educators volunteered many hours to complete the collaborative data-driven application within a week’s time.  This document not only included information on the academic success of our students, but expressed our belief in educating the whole child with a focus on our work around mental health awareness.

We are very proud to have provided and maintained excellent educational opportunities for students for so many years.  Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of Challenger Middle School!

  • CATS Program

Community – Your community can be your neighborhood, family, friends, school, businesses, libraries, parks, etc.  Do your best to make it safe, caring and clean.  It starts with you!
         * Be Caring     * Be Responsible

Attitude – You are in charge of your attitude each day. You can choose to react to a situation positively or negatively.  The choice is up to you!
         * Have Fun     * Be Positive

Tolerance – The world is made up of all different kinds of people.  Wouldn’t it be a boring place if we were all the same? Strive to respect, accept, and learn from each other!
         * Be Compassionate     * Be Accepting

Scholarship – Always do your best and take pride in anything and everything you do. Push yourself above and beyond people’s (and your own) expectations of yourself.  If you always do your best, you will have no regrets.  Autograph everything you do with excellence!
         * Explore Your World     * Learn New Things

The CATS Program encompasses a variety of items we already do at Challenger such as using student planners for organization and structure.  Our Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) Committee takes the lead on how to bring our entire community, including students, parents and staff, together.

Advisory - This seventeen minute class allows us to take care of school business without impacting instruction time.  PBIS creates character education lessons and ASB sponsors fun school spirit activities during this period.

Quote of the Week - You can be a part of our community by reading the quotation posted on our home page.  It is read to and reflected upon by our advisory classes weekly.  The selected quote often corresponds to the character education lesson.

CATS Tickets - Students are recognized for behavior which follows the CATS philosophy.  PBIS will draw from names periodically to reward those students with prizes.

Grade Point Average Awards Assemblies - Students who have earned a 3.0 GPA or above are recognized each semester for their acheivement.  We will have assemblies in February recognizing students who earned high GPAs for the first semester.  In September, we will hold assemblies recognizing students from the previous second semester.

    4.0 GPA - Principal's Honor Roll
    3.5 - 3.99 GPA - Honor Roll
    3.0 - 3.49 - Academic Acheivement
